TUG Test Apps in 60 Seconds

Three kinds of Timed Up and Go app: stopwatch, phone sensors and camera. What each gives you, and which time the six phases.

TUG Test Apps in 60 Seconds

Timed Up and Go apps come in three kinds:

  • Stopwatch apps: someone times you and taps. Total time only.
  • A phone carried on the body: in a pocket or at the waist, its motion sensors time the test. No one has to hold a stopwatch.
  • Camera apps: a phone films the test. Nothing is worn, and you can check the replay.

Only some apps time the six phases (standing up, walking out, turning, walking back, turning to sit, sitting down), and few have published evidence for the TUG itself.

Table of TUG app types: stopwatch apps give total time only; phone carried on the body gives total time, sometimes phases, and needs no one to time it; camera apps add a replay you can check
